A transistor is a three pieces semi-conductor having a thin central layer of one type of semiconductor, sandwiched between two relatively thick pieces of the other type. It is used as an amplifier.
There are two types of transistors. (i) NPN transistors (ii) PNP transistors
NPN transistors have a thin piece of p-type material sandwiched between two thick pieces of n-type.
PNP transistors consist of a thin piece of n-type material in between two thick pieces of p-Type
The central part in each is called ‘base’ and the pieces at either side are called emitter (e) and the collector (c)
