## Number System & Its Types

### Number Systems:

The number system is the system of counting and calculation. The number system is based on some characters called digits. Each number is made up of these characters.The no of digit a system uses is called base.

For example, the number system we use in our daily life is called Decimal system. Its base is 10 which means that it uses 10 digits.

There are four types of number system used in computer operations.

(i) Decimal (ii) Binary (iii) Octal (iv) Hexadecimal

### (i) The Decimal System:

We use this number system in our daily life for counting and calculations. In decimal system we count in “Tens” using the digits 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.

### (ii) The Binary System:

The · binary system is ideal for internal working of the electronic computer. Computer circuitry represents data in a pattern of ON or OFF states of electric current. Because there is only state, they are represented by 1 (for ON) and O (for OFF).

### (iii) The Octal System:

Octal is a Latin word used for eight (8). Octal has eight fundamental digits as, 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7.

### (iv) The Hexadecimal System:

Hexadecimal means 16, therefore this is a base-16. number system. It has 16 fundamental digits. The first ten digits are same as the decimal (0-9) and the rest of the 6 digits are the first six letters of the English alphabet (A, B, C, D, E, AND F).
