Describe the Lewis concept about acids and bases.

Lewis Concept of Acid:

According to an American Chemist Lewis, acid is that substance which can accept a lone pair of electrons. e.g. AICb, BF3

AICl3 acts as acid as Al is short of two electrons to complete its valence shell

AICl3     +       Cl               AICI4

Acid              Base        (Complex ion)

(Acceptor)        (Donor)

Lewis Concept of a Base:

According to him, a base is a species, which can donate a pair of electrons. e.g. OH”, F, NH3

The bond between NH3  and AICl3 is a coordinate covalent bond.
