Importance of education in the progress of a country:
The importance of education in the development and progress can be described as follows:
Education helps mankind to pass through many stages of evolution and reached to the present age of science and high technology.
Education helps the man to the domination of the natural forces. The modern man, due to scientific advancement, has controlled the rough rivers, deep seas, and the erupting volcano.
Education . and trained persons are the guarantee of the prosperity of the country. Researchers, scientists, and engineers come into being through education & training only.
Education helps in understanding the secret that economic development depends on education. We can conclude that economic, socia’I, political, technological and scientific development depends on education.
Education is also a source of producing the feelings of patriotism because the people are aware of the nationhood, national objectives and national policies thus _patriotism is produced in every individual of the society. Thus the opportunities for progress and development are produced in the nation and country.
Education helps in understanding the rights and duties of a citizen to perform his or her role for the.welfare and progress of the society.
Education helps not in understanding the ideology but it also tells about the methods through· which it can be made stable.
The sense of nationalism and love for country is created amongst the people through education which itself is the guarantee of stability of the country.
In brief, education and development are complementary. A developed nation promotes education further and education accelerates the pace of development in a country.
Important Educational problems of Pakistan:
Following are the main problems in education:
(1) The attitude of the Feudal:
The feudal system is the major obstacle in the way of education of the poor children. The parents are poor and can hardly afford educational expenses of their children. Feudal lords in the rural areas have discouraged education of the poor children. They want to employ poor children for little wages. This is the reason that literacy rate in the rural areas has not increased; especially the education of female children has suffered much.
(2) The attitude of Politicians and High officials:
Politicians, in general, are not in the favor of promoting and spreading education due to the reason that awakening in the people through education will expose their irregularities.
(3) High Fees for Private Educational Institutions:
Private sector educational institutions charge high fees as compared to the facilities provided there. Teachers are overworked but paid low salaries. Teachers in the private schools are less qualified and hence their standard is less than the teachers in the government schools.
(4) Shortage of Text Books:
Text Book Board gets the textbooks printed late. The price of textbooks is very high. Private schools provide their own books imported from other countries which are extremely expensive.
(5) Teacher Absenteeism:
In rural areas, teacher absenteeism has adversely affected the progress in education. Shortages of teachers in rural areas, ghost schools and lack of supervision of rural schools have resulted in low progress in the promotion of education and eradication of illiteracy.
(6) Shortage of physical facilities:
The teaching materials are extremely short in the schools 1ike chalk, boards, furniture, buildings, rooms etc. According to a survey, 25,000 schools do not have their buildings. Most of the village schools are deprived of the facilities of drinking water and bathrooms. Most of the village schools are confined to ‘one room’ school.
(7) Political Interference:
Public representatives interfere in the administration of educational institutions especially in the appointment and transfer of teachers. Merit is ignored and appointments are made on favoritism or political recommendations.
