Define tissue? Describe animal tissues in detail with the help of labeled diagram.

Definition of Tissue:

A tissue consists of a group of cells which are similar in structure and function.

Types of Animal Tissues:

(i) Epithelial Tissue:

The cells of this tissue occur in a single layer and are closely packed together. This tissue forms a surface layer underlines of the tubular organs of the body. Epithelial tissue occurs in glands where it is variously folded.

Types of Animal Tissues

(ii) Connective Tissues:

These tissues provide support to other tissues and organs and bind them together. They consist of a ground substance, cells, and fibers. They range from soft to very hard tissues. Fatty tissues are examples of the soft type. Cartilage and bone are special types of these tissues and are hard. Blood is also a special connective tissue with cells suspended in a fluid medium. It transports materials in the body.

(iii)Muscular Tissues:

This tissue is formed of muscle fibers. Each muscle fiber is an elongated cell, which has the ability to contract and relax. These tissues are responsible for the movement of the body and body parts.

Muscular Tissues:

(iv) Nervous Tissues:

These tissues are formed of cells called neurons or nerve cells. Nerve cells are specialized to conduct messages in the form of electrical currents. The nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves) is made up of this tissue.
