Define Oxides classifies Oxides on the basis of the oxidation state of oxygen into three groups with one example of each.



The binary compounds of oxygen with metals and nonmetals are called Oxides.

On the basis of oxidation state oxides are classified as follows:

(i) Normal Oxides: These are such oxides in which Oxygen shows normal oxidation state or valency number – 2.

Example: Cao, So2, Al2o3

(ii) Peroxides: Peroxides are oxides containing a higher proportion of oxygen then normal oxides and oxygen have an oxidation state or valiancy number – 1.

Example: Sodium Peroxide Na2 02

(iii) Super Oxides: Superoxides are those in which the oxidation state or valiancy number of oxygen is – 0.5.

Example: Potassium superoxide K02
