Define: (i) Homologous series (ii) Functional group (iii) Isomerism



(1) Functional Group:

The functional group is an atom or group of atoms, that is responsible for the chemical behaviour of that organic compound.

E.g. Alcohols contain —-OH group

 

(2) Homologues series:

Homologues series is a family of similar organic compounds which follow a regular structural pattern, in which each successive member has a difference of < CH2 group. 

E.g. Alkanes:

Methane CH4

Ethane C2H5

Propane C3H5

 

(3) Isomerism:

Isomerism is the existence of two or more organic compounds which have same molecular formula but different molecular structure.
