A keyboard is the primary text input device. It consists of a set of keys for computer input. The standard keyboard arrangement of alphabetic keys is known as the QWERTY keyboard. A standard keyboard includes about 100 keys and each key sends a different signal to the CPU. 

A keyboard is used as an input device. It is the very important device for a computer for input data. This device translates the signal into computer machine (CPU) readable· from keyboard may be divided into four groups. Or IBM produces three types of keyboards first the XT keyboard, second, the AT keyboard and third is enhanced keyboard.

Cursor Controlling Keys are Navigation keys.

These keys are used for moving around in documents or WebPages and editing text. They include the arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up, Page Delete, and Insert.


Modifier Keys:

A key on a keyboard that only has a meaning when combined with another key. For example, on an IBM compatible computer, the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys are modifier keys.


Alt Key:

Short for Alternate, Alt is a modifier key located on both sides of the spacebar on IBM compatible computer keyboards. The picture shows an example of what this keyboard key may look like. This term may also be used to describe a key combination such as the example below.

  • Alt + F = Pressing these two keys opens the File menu in an open program. 
  • Alt + .F4 = These keys close the open program. To close an open window in a program press Ctrl+F4.
  • Alt + Spacebar = Open the Window m·enu of the program currently open.
  • Alt + Tab = These keys will switch between open programs left-to-right. Pressing Alt+Shift+ Tab will reverse the order of switching programs.


Shift Key:

The shift key is a modifier key on a keyboard, used to type letters and another alternate “upper” characters. There are typically two shift keys, on the left and right sides of the row below the home row.
